Art, Culture and Events

Potsdam Music festival Concerts and events in front of and within the grounds of festively lit castles, stunt shows and cinema action in Filmpark Babelsberg or festivals and medieval castle spectacles – Brandenburg boasts a host of cultural events that are celebrated year for year. What is unique and fascin ating is above all the atmosphere of the event locations.

Even barns, factory halls and historical ruins serve as scenery, and last, but certainly not least, the very landscape itself lends unusual events a charming flair. Each region offers attractive possibilities to enjoy culture, and special highlights are an offer everywhere - even dreamy locations regularly became popular cultural destinations. © Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci/Mathias Marx

The Dennis Oppenheim Weeks

Until 13th July
As a pioneer of “Land Art”, Dennis Oppenheim has balanced the conflicting fields between urbane concentration of culture and rural fallow land. A fragment of his New York installation of “Landscapes of the future” in Central Park - an anticipated reminiscence of suppressed nature due to urban development - will now be seen in Potsdam. Trees, hedges, rocks, shrubs and flowers are being created in front of the Kunstraum (art room) in Schiffbauergasse, mixed with urban mundaneness. A retrospective on Oppenheim’s artistic work can be seen simultaneously in the interior of the art room.

“La Pastorale à Sanssouci” entices you into the land of desires and longings of court society and also of the flute-playing king: to Arcadia. Figures that visitors have possibly already met before at the castle and in the park, now appear in person before the eyes and ears of the audience in an impressive series of transformations. Part of the music dates back to Frederick II himself.
