24th January 2012 marks the 300th birthday of Frederick the Great.
Born in the year 1712, the successor to the throne of the “soldier king“ Frederick William I first made headlines in the courts of Europe at the age of 18. As a result of his attempted flight in 1730, which was intended to free him from the power of his father and the conventions shackling him as the heir to the throne, Frederick made a unique debut on the stage of world history, a stage that he was to leave in 1786 having earned for himself the epithet of “the Great”. Between these two dates he lived a life which, although it was seldom multi-faceted or dazzling, nevertheless displayed a thoroughly resolute and single-minded approach, a life which divides intellectual opinion even to this day. During the 2012 anniversary year, the major exhibition “Friedrisiko“ and a number of different events will be staged and provide a special perspective on the king’s life.
