All hands on deck. Spreewald ahoy! Could this be a dream? “It feels like we’re punting in Venice,” thinks Marion, whose thoughts keep returning to the meandering waterways, the fl oral wreaths of the local Sorbian people and the fresh fish they had for lunch. The punt stops for a group photo. That’s how it goes with these day trips. Everything is so green, as though the city were untold miles away. Yet Berlin is just an hour by bus. I always thought that these day trips were stuffy affairs … That’s clearly not the case in Brandenburg!
And then we’re off again. A group of 22 making a journey through the countryside. In the evening we’re off to Potsdam to experience a culinary feast in the Coach Stables. Or does anybody fancy dropping in on Frederick the Great for a spot of tea? It’s astonishing just how many illustrious fi gures come from this one region. Albert Einstein. We can knock on the door of his summer house in Caputh tomorrow. Anybody home? Soak up the view he once enjoyed of sailboats on the lakes. Theodor Fontane. Of course Marion is familiar with his poem about Squire von Ribbeck. Knows it by heart. “In his garden, there stood a pear tree …” And Prince Pückler, who built the pyramids in Branitz Park and is the namesake of her favourite dessert. Yet another world-famous local. I’m so happy I came! These aren’t any old day trips. And let’s not forget about Babelsberg – this town with its charming villas bears testament to one hundred years of fi lm history. Simply amazing.
Group tours get the royal treatment here: Brandenburg boasts a wealth of palaces and monasteries. Start at Rheinsberg and fi nish at Neuzelle, whose very walls exhale whispers from the past. We fi nish up by the fi reside in a typical 19th-century townhouse. Or in a country house by the lake. Whatever we feel like. Travel by handcar or by Jeep. Inhale the perfumed air in the rose gardens. Indulge in sugary delights at the chocolate factory. Marion can’t get enough of nature and can hardly wait for the cycling tour in a few days’ time, not to mention sleeping beside an open window in a former stately residence. Day trips, Mark Brandenburg style.
