The Brecht-Weigel House at Buckow – A place of poetry

The Brecht-Weigel House at Buckow The summerhouse of the author, poet and playwright Bertolt Brecht, who is famous for his works, such as the “Threepenny opera“, provides information on the married life and the joint work of the artist couple. Brecht resided there together with his wife Helene Weigel until he died in 1956. The original furnishings, models of stage sets, covered wagons and costumes for Brecht’s famous play “Mother Courage and her children“ illustrate the joint work of the playwright and the actress. The literature museum nestles in the typical mixed forests of the Brandenburg Marches Switzerland Nature Park (Märkische Schweiz) by the shore of Scharmützelsee (a lake) in Buckow health resort. The gentle waves in the North German Lowlands gave this part of Brandenburg the name “Schweiz“ (Switzerland). Departing from the Scharmützelsee promenade, you can go on boat trips across the lake. Hiking trails lead over the rounded hilltops into the wooded countryside, to which Brecht often liked to withdraw in the later phases of his creative activity, in order to enjoy the beautiful view of forest, meadows and lakes.
