Glashütte Museum Village – history of glass in the heart of Brandenburg

The history of glass production in Glashütte and the history of Reinholt Burger, the inventor of the indispensable Thermos flask, who was born in Glashütte, are graphically depicted in the old glass factory. Until 1980, practical and everyday objects, such as lampshades, lamp cylinders and fermentation flasks, were produced in the factory buildings and in the smelting plants. But other attractions, such as demonstration glassblowing and other craftwork are on offer on the extensive site, too. At the modern glass furnace, which was built in 1998, visitors can impressively watch how glass is created at a heat of 1,200 to 1,400 °C and is processed when red hot from the fire. Courageous people can try their hand at blowing a glass ball themselves. In this way, the Glashütte museum village offers practical insights into the art of glass production from the alchemical experiments of the 18th century to the industrial production in modern times. A café, a restaurant and a lovingly furnished tea and herbal shop invite you to relax and to enjoy culinary delights on the site. A pottery in the reconstructed half-timbered barn offers hand-made Glashütte jugs and mugs for sale. In addition, we recommend a visit to the nearby Wildpark Johannesmühle (game park) for families and children, which houses bears, wolves and lynxes.
