Ziesar Bishop’s Castle – religious ambience and medieval art

Ziesar Bishop’s Castle During the Middle Ages, Ziesar Castle was the residence of the Brandenburg bishops. The place was first mentioned in the foundation document of the Brandenburg bishopric in 948 under the name of Ezeri. The symbol of the bishop’s residence, which is visible from afar, is the 37m keep. The cupola of the keep resembles a bishop’s mitre. The castle chapel with its magnificent red brick façade that dates back to the year 1470 is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. In its interior, one can admire the fully preserved mural paintings originating from the period around 1500 –a rarity in the north-east German cultural area. Apart from underfloor heating, sensational mural paintings, including illustrations of holy places, have also been preserved in the Palas (palace), the episcopal living area and the site of the future museum. Besides various artistic and festive events, the permanent exhibition “Ways to the town of heaven. Bishop – faith – rule (from 800 to 1500)“ will take place in Ziesar Castle, the bishop’s residence, from May 2005. Visitors may be on tenterhooks regarding the fascinating insights into the world of the Middle Ages in an authentic place and with a special museum concept.
