Experiencing German unity On the trail of the history of German-German unity in Brandenburg

History comes alive at the Glienicke Bridge in Potsdam, once the scene of legendary agent exchanges, or on the Wall Cycle Path, which runs around the Berlin Wall. In the former military town of Wünsdorf in Fläming, you can immerse yourself in the secrets of times gone by. Follow actor Tom Hanks' example and visit Eisenhüttenstadt, 1.5 hours east of Berlin. The town was the first socialist planned town to be designed entirely at the drawing board.

GDR architecture: time travelling through Brandenburg's socialist architecture

Eisenhüttenstadt was born in 1950 with the construction of Eisenhüttenkombinat Ost. The town near the Polish boarder is still a novelty in urban development in Germany today: the "first model socialist city on German soil" was created as a planned city on the drawing board and was placed under a preservation order just 40 years after construction began. In 2017 actor Tom Hanks visited the city during a break from filming, everyone has been talking about "Iron Hut City", as he freely translated it. But there are still buildings elsewhere in the country that were built during the GDR era.

Filmland Brandenburg

 "And action!" - this sentence is uttered in Brandenburg along with the famous clapperboard on more than 5,000 shooting days a year on average. Films such as “Enemy at the gates”, “Inglourious Basterds” and “Bridge of Spies” were filmed here. The famous film studios in Potsdam-Babelsberg also have a chequered history behind them.
