Fläming Land of castles, paradise for hikers and skaters

The Fläming Heath's name is derived from the Belgian-born Flemings who once settled in this region southeast of Berlin. Forests and fields, rural churches and windmills, impressive castles and monasteries define the local landscape. The best way to explore the Fläming Heath is to go by foot on one of the many hiking paths or on Europe's largest skater way. The historic centres of rural towns along the way appeal to visitors. The famous Beelitzer Spargel (asparagus) and many other delicacies are offered at farm shops and restaurants.

Let's go! We show you how to spend the perfect day in the Fläming, give you useful tips and recommendations surrounding your vacation and reveal the best highlights you don't want to miss. Hiking and marvelling...

The Fläming Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling and skating adventures, offering a wealth of different nature experiences. Plenty of hiking trails, like the “Burgenwanderweg”, the “Internationale Kunstwanderweg” or the “Panoramawanderweg” traverse the Hoher Fläming Nature Park whilst offering incredible views of the spa town Kurort Bad Belzig.

The deep periglacial dry valleys and small elevations serve as evidence of the glacial period aside from many erratic boulders used to built the picturesque fieldstone churches. The Hagelberg (hill) even measures 200 metres and, according to current measurements, is considered the third largest elevation in Brandenburg.

Combine your summer hiking trip with a very natural and refreshing foot reflexology massage – barefoot on the “Barfußwanderweg”. Be fully amazed on the “Kunstwanderweg” as you approach strange looking cows’ udders, steel sculptures and other striking art objects along the way. There is also a barefoot trail in Beelitz Heilstätten – perfectly suited for a visit with the whole family. Adjacent to the trail is the canopy walk “Baumkronenpfad: Baum und Zeit”, centrally located on the premises of the former sanitarium “Beelitzer Heilstätten”. These came into existence over 100 years ago. Today, the disabled-friendly canopy trail draws plenty of visitors.

A journey through the Middle Ages

The castles in the Fläming Heath like Burg Eisenhardt, Burg Rabenstein or the bishop residence Burg Ziesar, bear witness to the medieval period. The Kloster Zinna, a monastery in the Lower Fläming Heath, was also built during this time. The permanent exhibition in the monastery portrays the history of the Cistercian Order, and the Zinnaer Klosterbruder Distillery (viewing-only) attracts visitors to come and sample some herb liqueur. More than 100 years ago, the famous hospital complex and sanitarium “Beelitzer Heilstätten” came into existence. Here, a spectacular treetop walkway (fully accessible) winds its way above the “Alpenhaus” World War ruin, allowing visitors to explore the site and its extraordinary trees on the rooftop.
