Thanks to the quartz sand deposits and forested areas, the first glassworks was established in Grimnitz in 1571. It was moved to Althüttendorf in 1653. Bohemian and Hessian glassmakers settled there and produces drinking glasses, window glass and potash. In 1792, the last glassworks left the village and moved to other forested areas in Brandenburg with quartz sand deposits. Today, the annual Glass Day festivities take place in July or August in Joachimsthal, organised by FV Grimnitzer Glashütten e.V. There are exhibitions at the association’s glassworks over six days with glass blowers from all over Germany.
