Over 40 historic railway vehicles are presented in the vehicle depots and workshops. The museum provides an insight into the history of railway technology with the exhibited railway vehicles. Particular highlights include the steam locomotive rides on the Heidekrautbahn railway from Easter to Advent.

The private stretch of railway, commonly called the “Heidekrautbahn” in the Berlin vernacular, was opened in 1901 and was actually called the “Reinickendorf-Liebenwalde-Groß Schönebecker railway”. In addition to transporting passengers, it also successfully transported goods and commodities from the region. There used to be a Berlin-Wilhelmruh connection to the Prussian state railway. The Tegel-Friedrichfelde industrial railway was later acquired before the railway network was appropriated after the Second World War ended and was divided up a number of times at the sector borders. It was expanded as part of a bypass route from West Berlin but after the fall of the Berlin Wall it was decommissioned in stages. Today, the route is being operated once again by the private Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn railway service. A connection to the existing Deutsche Bahn network from Wilhelmsruh to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen is planned.

Berliner Eisenbahnfreunde e.V friends’ association moved to Basdorf in 1996 and organises regular trips on historic vehicles on the Heidekrautbahn railway in summer.
