The charmingly set out local history museum in the front palace is perfect for a leisurely look around. It wonderfully reflects everyday life in this rural region in a series of different rooms. The main focus of the exhibition is on the history of Sonnewalde Palace and the 450-year long history of the Counts zu Solms-Sonnewalde. But it also looks at school education and office work since 1900, the everyday life of a housewife and typical crafts, including woodworking or shoe making.

The local history museum also holds special exhibitions and guided tours with explanations about the history of the town. The palace also houses the town archives and the civil registry room.
