The observation tower is located by the Streng, a rewetting area between the lakes Rietzener See and Netzer See. Large numbers of water birds and favourable conditions make for an excellent observation point. One of Germany’s biggest colonies of black-necked grebes lives here. It is also an important resting place for various duck species, sea gulls, sea swallows and red-necked grebes. Thousands of bean geese and greater white-fronted geese, as well as up to 4,000 cranes, rest here in spring and autumn. Kingfishers, sea eagles and ospreys can often be seen, and cormorants breed on the opposite shore.

Tip:

In the tower there is a book in which you can read about recent observations and enter your own sightings. There is a nine kilometres long circular trail around the Streng that takes you along vast reed areas, wetland meadows and farmland.

How to get there:

On the A2, take the Netzen exit. In the village Netzen, turn right into the paved village street that becomes a paved path at the end of the village that will take you through the fields and to the Emster Canal. Parking is available in front of the bridge across the canal. After the bridge, walk along the left side of the canal, then turn right towards the tower after 300 metres.
