If you are driving east from Zerbst, you will see Garitz cobblestone church from afar. The typical Fläming cobblestone masonry has been built in an unusual manner here and suggests that it was built relatively late, probably in the 14th century. The church is a simple rectangular hall. Garitz village church as it stands today was probably dates from the mid-18th century, having been heavily damaged in the Thirty Years War. In inscription over the portal says 1741, when the Baroque mansard roof and ridge turret were built and the east part was extended with a half-timbered structure. The church’s patron, Heinrich Ludwig von Davier, had already donated a new altar in 1708 depicting the Adoration of the Magi, the Crucifixion of Jesus and the patron and his family on both sides. What is very unusual for a village church of this style and size is the three large ceiling paintings, containing allegorical motifs for music, baptism and veneration of the Holy Spirit. The bell and the romantic baptismal font, which was refurbished in 1858, are also original.
