The New Town Market in Brandenburg an der Havel lost its original appearance during the final weeks of the war in 1945. The pillory and executioner’s block, a fountain and the official New Town Hall stood here, which later became the administrative office of the entire city. Nothing remains of the above. Only the stone statue of Roland, which tells of Brandenburg civic pride, remained. Today it stands guard over the historic Town Hall in the Old Town and a copy stands in front of the Brandenburg Mark Museum in Berlin.

The hands-on relief gives onlookers an overview of the three historic parts of the city: the Old Town, the New Town and the Cathedral Island. The relief also features Braille writing and so can also be read by visually impaired people.
