Since autumn 2017, work has been underway on the reconstruction of the Garrison Church tower in Potsdam. The exterior architecture is a reconstruction of the “Hof- und Garnisonkirche” (Court and Garrison Church), which was built in 1735. Shortly before the end of the war in 1945, this historic building burned down in a bombing raid; in 1968 it was blown up for ideological reasons.

The 57-metre-high visitor terrace is due to open in 2023. The almost 90-metre high building will have four fully-fledged floors, 365 steps, 69 doors and an elevator. The glockenspiel under the almost 90-metre-high tower roof will also be heard once again.

The aim of reconstruction of this building as a contemplative memorial and forum for peace and reconciliation is to establish a reminder and a place of learning democracy and reconciliation. The temporary Cross of Nails chapel on the construction site already provides lots of information. The small exhibition entitled “Fragments and Perspectives” highlights 300 years of Prussian and German history.
