As an outstanding example of the North German Baroque, the Garrison Church has always played an important cultural and tourist role in Potsdam. The rebuilt church tower now allows architecture and craftsmanship to be experienced again and replaces a missing spot in the cityscape.

The court- and garrison church, built in 1735, was considered an outstanding example of North German Baroque and burned heavily after a bomb attack in April 1945. At the time of the division of Germany, the GDR leadership had the ruins blown up in 1968.

Like a mirror, this monument reflects the complexity of German history over the past three centuries. Symbolically associated with rise and fall, human achievement and failure, this becomes a forum for historical and current discourse. Remembering the past, shaping the future, living peace and democracy: That's what the tower of the rebuilt garrison church is all about

In the exhibition “Faith, Power and Military” this story is told in an exciting way on 250 square meters: around 350 objects, films, audio files and interactive media encourage critical questioning, thinking and discussion. The show spans a range from Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I through the Weimar Republic, the dictatorship of the National Socialists and the SED rule to German reunification and the debate about the reconstruction of the garrison church. The ambivalent history of Prussia and Potsdam is linked to questions of the present. Are there just wars? What is the value of democracy? What is freedom? Let yourself be impressed and inspired to reflect!

At the apex of the tower, the eight-meter-high Nail Cross Chapel with two organs was built. Based on recent history, the earlier passages into the nave are laid out on the floor level. A reminder of the Holy Cross congregation established in the tower ruins after the war. The chapel in the garrison church is open to everyone. It is a city church that connects people and brings them into conversation, that stands up for human dignity and promotes peace. The spiritual life in the Garrison Church is characterized by the “Community of the Cross of Nails” - network. The aim is to establish a culture of peace and reconciliation in the spirit of the global Cross of Nails movement in Coventry. “Direct our feet on the path of peace”: This base inscription can be found in five languages on the tower of the garrison church. The Bible verse from the Gospel of Luke is the compass for the work and program in the Garrison Church.

Highlight, in the truest sense of the word, is the “360 degree panorama”: the visitor platform at a height of 57 meters can be reached by elevator or 365 steps past several thousand signed donor bricks. Here you have unique views of Potsdam with its many towers and domes, the shimmering water landscapes and lush forests all the way to Berlin.

The garrison church is barrier-free: elevator to the visitors' terrace, wheelchair-accessible toilet, no threshold, color-contrasting and equipped with a Braille guidance system.
