The dolmen, or megalithic tomb, on the outskirts of Mellen is the last almost completely preserved tomb of its kind in the Prignitz region. The tomb was built in the period between 3000 and 2500 BC (Middle Neolithic period). The tomb measuring approximately 22 x 8 metres was formed by a central chamber covered by a hill and a rectangular stone setting.
Owing the removal of stones in the 19th century, the tomb in Mellen lost three of its six capstones and some other stones. Today, some stones are no longer in their original position. The internments in the chamber were probably destroyed in the 19th century. Nonetheless, the complex is an impressive testimony to the ancient settlement of the Prignitz region.
The tomb is located at the starting point of the hiking trail around Rambower Moor.
