When there is a rustic restaurant next to a bustling hair salon and hand-made furniture next to the local history museum, you are probably in the historic barn district in Kremmen. Just 30 kilometres from the big city hustle and bustle of Berlin, visitors can find a building ensemble that is unique throughout Germany with about 50 barns, lined up like pearls on a string. The listed area built in the 17th century in the Ruppiner Seenland Lake District is a centre for art, music and commerce. Here, locals meet visitors and gourmets meet craftspeople; lively bustle is part of everyday life in the historic barn district. Not quite so usual, on the other hand, but all the more exciting for it are the film shoots that took place in the nearby district of Linumhorst.

For the children’s film “Die Bücherdiebin” (The Book Thief), the listed steelwork bridge over the Alte Rhin was used as a backdrop for the film. The connection between Wustrau and Kremmen, which is currently open to pedestrians and cyclists, was as if it was made for Hollywood as a film location for this enthralling film adaptation. In the Oscar-nominated film, the protagonist Liesel Meminger learns to appreciate the power of the written word so much that she can use it to can escape tragic reality.

A classic children’s crime drama set in the Ruppiner Seenland Lake District was also based on a book. In the film “TKKG – Jede Legende hat ihren Anfang” (TKKG – Every legend has a beginning”, the young detectives Tim, Karl, Klößchen and Gaby conduct their investigations in Kremmen. The sharp-witted sleuths, known as TKKG, want to solve a secretive art robbery.

And the makers of the road movie “Familie ist kein Wunschkonzert” (Family is not a request concert)“ set up their film set in the town with the historic town centre. The ARD production tells the story of three sisters and their journey full of experiences and realisations to their parents.

Kremmen in the Ruppiner Seenland Lake District offers other interesting days out in addition to seeing exciting film locations and visiting the historic barn district. You can explore buildings steeped in history such as Ziethen Castle or Schwante Castle. For some refreshments afterwards, visitors can make their way to the Kremmen asparagus farm or the Ziegenkäserei Karolinenhof goat’s cheese dairy.
