The designer Christian Masche designs and produces unique utility items and objects made of wood. He runs his studio in a 200-year-old building that was once an inn. For 15 years he has developed techniques and designs for exclusive objects of daily use such as lamps, spice mills and lanterns. He draws on the variety of colours and structures provided by high-grade indigenous woods. Since 2009 he has shared his knowledge in individual courses for beginners and advanced students.

Products: Lamps, illuminated objects, spice mills, lanterns, wooden sculptures, wood turning

For several years Christian Masche has done wood turning in the Oderbruch using selected wood. Illuminated objects such as lamps and lanterns. It is a considerable challenge to process the wood transparently and use it to create aesthetic lamps. The effort is rewarded with a wonderfully warm light.

The design: Clear, functional design combined with natural structures. The warm, natural tones of the woods are contrasted with materials such as concrete, steel, etc.

The light: When the light shines through the wood, one is surprised by the wonderfully warm tone. Depending on the type of wood, the light varies from a deep red to honey-coloured yellow tone.

The material: Wood that mainly comes the Oderbruch is used for the delicately turned lamps and lanterns Ash and various hardwoods are primarily suitable for turning.

The technique: The heavy blanks of fresh wood are transformed into filigree objects on the lathe. Finely sharpened, hand-guided tools are used to cut the translucent surfaces in thin slices of solid wood.

Other aspects: Perhaps the exclusive pepper mills will arouse your interest: these are created by Christian Masche in a clear and simple design from indigenous “exotic” materials such as vinegar tree or barred ash.
