The museum that is the only one of its kind in Germany, provides for an insight into the life and work of Gerhart Hauptmann. He lived in this house from 1885 to 1889 and it is where he took up writing. In order to acknowledge the impact that Erkner had on the writer, the title ‘Gerhard Hauptmann Stadt’ was introduced in 2012.

The museum was furnished using items from the estate of the Nobel Prize winner: Paintings, furniture and other everyday items from the family and the 19th century allow for an authentic impression of Hauptmann’s era. Visitors can book a tour, and films can be screened by request. The museum is also a tourist information point. Furthermore, it is home to a research archive and the exhibition benefits greatly from this comprehensive collection.

Readings, concerts, film screenings, special exhibitions and cycle tours in Hauptmann’s footsteps are also organised. ‘Hauptmann’s garden stage’ is set up in the little park in summer to perform plays. Every year around the poet’s birthday in November, the museum holds the Gerhard Hauptmann Days with a special series of various formats of events that differ from year to year.

The park is home to sculptures by Sabina Grzimek. Along the Gerhart Hauptmann Route that has been set up by the museum, you can walk across town in the writer’s footsteps. The role of the different places in Hauptmann’s life and work is explained on information panels.

The bus stop Erkner – Gerhart-Hauptmann-Strasse is located directly outside the museum, and the bus stop Erkner - Genezareth-Kirche is also nearby. Further sights are located in the immediate vicinity of the museum.
