Since 2012, the plastic and chemicals gallery ‘KuCK’ has been home to a small alternating exhibition showing everyday items made of Bakelit. It was the world’s first industrially produced, fully synthetic plastic. The exhibition also covers the chemical industry in Erkner and the surrounding region. There is a permanent exhibition at the museum park am Sonnenluch.

The exhibition is managed by ChemieFreunde Erkner e.V. The friends’ association that was established in 2003, is dedicated to commemorating the history of chemistry, and in particular of plastic, and its impact on the development of Erkner.

The Belgian-American chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland invented Bakelit in 1907. He found the required raw material at Julius Rütgers’ ‘Teerproductenfabrik’ in Erkner. The Rütgers AG and Baekland subsequently established the Bakelite GmbH in Erkner, giving rise to the world’s first industrial production of plastic. This makes Erkner the ‘cradle of the age of plastic’.

The KuCK is located in the centre of town, opposite the town hall. The nearest bus stop is called Erkner - City-Center, and the regional train and S-Bahn station is not far away, either. The central coach station is located in direct vicinity of the train station. Further sights are accessible on foot from here.
