The Peitzer Land region is located between Spreewald Forest and the Schlaubetal Valley, and the area is best known for its fish farming and fishpond cultivation activities. Carps from the Peitzer Land are very popular and well-known. The area is home to one of Germany’s biggest connected pond areas called Peitzer Teiche that is an important hub of the fishing industry. The pond area stretches from the edge of the town Peitz all the way to the village Teichland. The Peitzer Land region is characterised in particular by the language and culture of the Sorbs/Wends who are Germany’s smallest Slavic minority group. At the Wendish-German local history museums in Jänschwalde and Tauer and the local history museum Kólasko in Drachhausen, visitors can learn about the traditions and customs of the Sorbs/Wends and about village life in the past. The towns and villages of the region are dedicated to keeping their Lower Sorbian customs alive. These include “Zampern”, the carnival called “Fastnacht”, Easter fires and the harvest festival. Girls and women wear traditional costumes at the “Fastnacht” celebrations that are held in February and March, as well as at the harvest festivals in August and September. The Peitzer Land region has a lot to offer, when it comes to tourist attractions and cultural offerings, and it is perfect for enjoyable bicycle tours. The Teichland adventure park with its many activities for visitors of all ages is a popular destination for a day out.

The political boundaries of the Peitzer Land region are identical with those of the municipal district Peitz. The district was established in summer 1992 and it now comprises 8 towns and villages: the fishing and fortress town Peitz and the villages Tauer, Turnow-Preilack, Teichland, Drachhausen, Drehnow,  Jänschwalde and Heinersbrück.
