The cranes are increasingly taking over the former open-cast area around Schlabendorf in Heinz Sielmann Natural Landscape in Wanninchen. Numerous geese and up to 7,000 cranes stay overnight in the newly created wetlands and open-pit reservoirs. They are easy to observe from the shelters on the shore. Various types of duck, sand martins, little ringed plovers and sea eagles are also regularly to be seen. Black larks and stonechats appear in the peripheral areas.

Employees of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation provide spotting scopes and binoculars, as well as helping visitors to observe and identify the migratory birds and learn more about them. The meeting time is about an hour before sunset. If possible, please bring your own binoculars. Please refer to the Nature Experience Centre website for dates and prices.

How to get there:

The Heinz Sielmann Nature Experience Centre Wanninchen can be reached by car or bike via the Luckau district of Görlsdorf. The access road is signposted from the Görlsdorf-Garrenchen or Görlsdorf-Beesdau connection road.
