The 300-hectare moor forms the centre of Luckau Basin, an important gathering and resting area for cranes. The birds stay here in the shelter of the reed bed in the open water. From the 20-metre-high observation tower on the edge of the Borcheltsbusch nature reserve, it is easy to watch them fly in during the evening. There are individual cranes in the area all year round; in autumn numbers increase to as many as 3,000. In addition, bean goose, greater white-fronted goose, various shorebirds, ducks and sea eagles can be observed in the autumn, while ospreys and marsh harriers can be seen in the summer.

Tip: Most of the cranes can be seen in September and October. From August to October, the nature conservation station offers guided tours.

How to get there:
  • Luckau – Freesdorf: follow Calauer Chaussee in the direction of Schlochendorf. Take the branch-off to Freesdorf. In Freesdorf follow Dorfstrasse to Goßmar.
  • Luckau – Goßmar: Follow the B96 local bypass from Luckau in the direction of Riedebeck. Before Riedebeck, turn off for Goßmar then follow signs for Freesdorf.

The tower is located between Goßmar and Freesdorf directly on the connecting road. Parking is available right next to the tower.
