The Unterspreewald very often gets somewhat neglected en route for the central Oberspreewald. But not only is it convenient to reach from Berlin, it also offers absolute peace and quiet – at least on week days. This tour offers great insights into the unspoilt beauty of the Spreewald.

Length/duration: 22 kilometres (1 days)

Start/finish: Schlepzig / Unterspreewald

How to get there:
  • Public transport: Take the RE2 (Cottbus) or the RB 24 (Senftenberg) from Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof) to Lübben (approximately 50 minutes). From there, take bus 506 to Schlepzig, journey time 20 minutes
  • Car: From Berlin via the A13 to the exit Rietzneuendorf/Staakow, then via Tropical-Islands-Allee to Schlepzig (approximately 1 hour).

Route: Schlepzig, Puhlstrom, Quaaspree, Zerniasfließ, Schiwanstrom, Pfahlspree, Groß Wasserburg (same route back, or else Puhlstrom, Quaaspree, Schlepzig)

Tour description:  Take the main River Spree (Hauptspree) in the direction of Lübben; after about 3 kilometres turn right into River Puhlstrom (or alternatively continue for another 1 kilometre to Gasthaus Petkamsberg). Follow the Puhlstrom at an easy pace in the direction of flow until you reach the pergola. Then return to the Puhlstrom as far as the Quaaspree. After about one kilometre, turn left into River Zernias (either the lock is open or the boat has to be carried). Follow the Zernias downhill as far as the Schnelle Kathrin. Follow the Schiwanstrom as far as the Puhlstrom. In front of the lock called Unteres Puhlstromwehr, take a sharp left into the Pfahlspree. Turn right again onto the Wasserburger Spree as far as Wasserburg. On the way back, stay on the Puhlstrom (as you have to go up the Puhlstrom, you should save some of your energy for this section). Go through the lock called Oberes Puhlstromwehr or carry your canoe around it. After 500 metres you reach the Quaaspree again before arriving in Schlepzig.

On-shore outings:

  • Schlepzig: Museum of agricultural history, half-timbered church from 1782
  • Groß Wasserburg (moated castle): harbour, restaurants

Nautical information:

  • Strong current on the “way back” on the Puhlstrom
  • Puhlstrom may only be used from July onwards outside the breeding period. Alternatively, the main River Spree (Hauptspree) can also be used during this time.
  • Both weirs can either be passed through or canoes can be carried. At the Unteres Puhlstromwehr there are people who open and close the locks, at least from Friday to Sunday (always be sure to have some money in your pocket for tips – that's how to keep the lock operators happy ;)
