In the Krausnicker mountains between Groß Wasserburg and Köthen, the traces of the Ice Age glaciers are particularly apparent. Köthen on the southern shore of Lake Köthener See was founded in the 16th century as a Wendish village. Lake Köthener See is the largest of eight lakes surrounding the village. The altitude difference between Lake Köthen and the 144-metre high Wehlaberg mountain, which is about 2 kilometres away, is more than 100 metres. It is challenging route for hikers interested in nature and geology. But even if all you are looking for is some peace and quiet and nice countryside, you must visit the Köthener Heideseen lakes. The “Kühns Gasthaus” restaurant on the village green serves hearty traditional fare. The route is partly identical with the E10 (European Long-Distance Path) and the 66-Lakes Trail.
