The Grumsin beech forest has been part of the World Natural Heritage Site “Ancient Beech Forests of Germany” since 2011. It can impress with its unusual surface relief of jagged hills and deep valleys. In many places, the forest is interrupted by differently sized marshes, alder swamps and forest lakes. The area is home to white-tailed eagles, cranes, black storks and the rare marsh calla.

The starting point of the hike is the granite church in Altkünkendorf. The walk goes through the pronounced relief landscape to Louisenhof, a former outlying estate that is now a place where artists live and work. On the northern edge of the Grumsin, the route goes past the old stone processing site and into the beech forest with its hilly, deep valleys, marshes and small bodies of water.
