Outlook on 2012: F300 – 300th Birthday of Frederick the Great

24th January 2012 marks the 300th birthday of Frederick the Great.
Born in the year 1712, the successor to the throne of the “soldier king“ Frederick William I first made headlines in the courts of Europe at the age of 18. As a result of his attempted flight in 1730, which was intended to free him from the power of his father and the conventions shackling him as the heir to the throne, Frederick made a unique debut on the stage of world history, a stage that he was to leave in 1786 having earned for himself the epithet of “the Great”.  Between these two dates he lived a life which, although it was seldom multi-faceted or dazzling, nevertheless displayed a thoroughly resolute and single-minded approach, a life which divides intellectual opinion even to this day. During the 2012 anniversary year, the major exhibition  “Friedrisiko“ and a number of different events will be staged and  provide a special perspective on  the king’s life.

A Journey back in time into the History of the GDR and the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Glienicke Bridge, Potsdam A journey into the past. Out and about in Berlin decades after the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
2009 witnessed the twentieth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall on 9th November 1989. Images of the anniversary celebrations were beamed around the world. And now the time is ripe for a trip to Berlin and Brandenburg and the chance to form personal impressions. How did people live in the socialist worker and peasant farmer state, what did they do every day, how did living in the GDR shape the fate of individuals? Travellers in Brandenburg can probe the answers to these questions by visiting museums and memorial sites and by taking part in excursions, guided tours and events. Many relics of the Cold War are well-maintained and accessible to visitors.
