In 1743, Friedrich II had a steel and ironworks founded in Neustadt/Eberswalde to process the raw products manufactured in the metalworks. Cutlers shear smiths were employed and a colony was built for them from 1751.

The end of commercial support

In 1753, the king leased the steel and ironworks to Berlin banking establishment Splitgerber & Daum and then gave it to them in 1765. The works faced increasing economic difficulties and was finally closed in 1836 under the manufacturer Schickler.

The cutlers’ colony along what is now Schicklerstrasse widens toward the centre to form a square. The square and the one storey half-timbered house semi-detached houses with forge workshops to the rear and the changed form of the factory building still demonstrate royal commercial support. Today, the history of the town can be traced at Museum Eberswalde.
