The Early Gothic cobblestone church with Gothic Revival fittings was built in about 1250. However, there was already a church in the same spot in 1192. Based on its structure, the church in Gölsdorf was constantly changing. After being built in the second half of the 13th century, in 1579 the wooden parts were replaced but the stonewalls were retained. The church got its tower in 1725, which was then replaced in about 1775. Further renovations followed. The church is essentially a hall with a traditional half-timbered tower and can therefore be counted among the well-known Fläming stone churches.

During the Battle of Dennewitz, Gölsdorf was raided three times. A memorial stone with the following inscription commemorates the events: “The murderous battle torridly surrounded you, cemetery. The blood of brothers ran red, oh, from the church altar.” To the north in the churchyard, the cenotaph of cavalry captain Franz Johann Ludwig Alberthal (1778-1813) can be seen. He died at the Battle of Dennewitz. 

Over the centuries, the town was plundered by Hussites in 1429 and fell victim to The Plague at the end of the 16th century. The church is on the Luther-Tetzel Trail.
