He lived here for almost half a century and created those paintings that are now in the world's great museums: He portrayed the electors and reformers, designed altarpieces or small cabinet pieces on Venus, Eve & Co. Around 1511/1512 he acquired the courtyards Markt 4 and 5. Lucas Cranach the Younger was born here on October 4, 1515. In 1518, Cranach the Elder bought the courtyard at Schlossstraße 1, which his son Lucas later took over.

The historic Cranach courtyards have been extensively renovated and are listed as historical monuments. In the courtyard at Markt 4, the Cranach Foundation is showing the exhibition "Cranach's World.
