The town of Friesack decided in 1894 to commemorate the first Brandenburg Elector to mark the town’s 600-year celebration. The Burgraviate of Nuremberg from the House of Hohenzollern conquered Friesack Castle in 1414 and ousted the Quitzow robbers from the territory. Frederick I was awarded the Mark Brandenburg as a reward for the victory. Emperor William II took over the patronage of the project and the solemn unveiling of the monument, which is almost 9 metres high, took place in his presence. The surroundings were subsequently designed and a park was created as a "worthy framework" for the monument.

The period after the Second World War was a sad time for the park. Robbed of its monument, which is believed to have been stolen in the Second World War, dismantled and then melted down, the park became increasingly derelict and neglected.

On May 19, 2012, after almost 60 years of hibernation, the renovated and largely preserved public park was reopened. The renovation measures of the 1-hectare park with trees of over 110 years old restored the historic structures and the paths. Shrubs were planted more densely and a variety of new species were added based on historical documents.

The different areas of the garden are once again clearly structured and more attractively laid out. In the centre of the park stands the monument of Frederick I, one of the most impressive monuments in the state of Brandenburg. Benches dotted around the park encourage visitors to sit awhile and reflect on their surroundings. Opposite the park entrance is an ice cream parlour, guaranteed to sweeten any visit to the Hohenzollern Park.
