Two loop trails start at Ferchesarer Weg and, at 3 km and 5.5 km in length, are perfect for beginners. Follow the narrow footpath running parallel to the road, which soon turns into a wider forest trail leading into the woods. On the left, typical Brandenburg pine forest stretches along the path, while on the right you’ll find a rich mixed forest. Watch out for cyclists! The Havelland Cycle Route crosses here. The path follows the former narrow-gauge railway line that, from 1900 onwards, ran from Rathenow to Paulinenaue. Locals nicknamed the little train “Silent Pauline” because its slow, rattling rides were frequently interrupted by numerous stops.

The first part of the trail follows the nature education path, where several information boards introduce you to the animal and plant species living in the city forest. At the next junction, you can choose your route:
  • For the shorter trail, continue along the nature path. Follow it sharply to the right, and you’ll soon find yourself back at the starting point.
  • For a longer hike, take the left path deeper into the city forest towards the Rauher Berg (Rough Hill). The forest gradually transforms into a beautiful beech woodland, which glows in vibrant red and orange tones in autumn. Elm trees, now rare in many places, are still common here, and their golden foliage in fall bathes the forest in warm color. The terrain becomes more varied as you walk up and down and around the Rauher Berg in a wide arc.

The second half of the longer route takes you along narrow paths through younger pine woodlands. Later, the nature path rejoins your route. And when you hear a rooster crowing somewhere behind the trees, you’ll know you’re almost back at your starting point.

Tip: Make the short detour up to the top of the Rauher Berg. For the forest’s 700th anniversary, Rathenow residents placed a commemorative stone here, celebrating the city’s long connection with the woods – a perfect spot for a break.
