The first documentary reference to the municipality of Glindow on the west bank of Lake Glindow See, now a district of Werder (Havel), was in 1317. Cistercian monks from Lehnin mined clay here as far back as the 15th century and fired bricks. The later brought wine making and fruit growing to the region too. Both were an economic boon for the location. The hilly landscape of what are called the “Glindow Alps”, shape by clay mining, is an attractive place to hike.

The local history museum is to be found in Kietz, the oldest part of the municipality, in a five-axis “Büdnerhaus” (smallholding farmhouse) with a hipped roof. The house was first mentioned in 1769 in an inheritance certificate. The last owner, Ms Frau Anneliese Koch, left the house to the municipality of Glindow with the request that a local history museum be set up. In 1993, “Kochsche Haus” became a protected monument and renovated in accordance with the guidelines for listed buildings. The “Schwarze Küche” (black kitchen) in its original condition is a particular attraction of the house.

With the help of many Glindow residents as well as the neighbouring municipalities, furniture, dishes, devises for the kitchen and garden, photographs, pictures and writings from the previous centuries were gathered together to create an exhibition. One particularly valuable find is a separation map of the municipality dating from 1823. Following extensive restoration, it provided information on names, properties and clay mines.
