As early as 1854, when the Baptists were not yet recognised as a church in many parts of Germany, the Prussian king met with some of their leading figures at Sanssouci and assigned them equal status with the other churches of the Evangelical Alliance.

Although there were already large numbers in Berlin in the 19th century, the Potsdam Baptist community did not become established as an independent organisation until 1910. Its first parish hall was destroyed in the night of bombing on April 14, 1945. After an exchange of land, the Evangelical Free Church Christians were able to build their second church on the ruins of the chapel of the Great Military Orphanage from 1957 to 1960, the latter having also been destroyed in the war.

In 1993 an extension was added to meet the growing needs of the community.
