There are over 300 lakes in the Oder-Spree Lake District – close to Berlin, with plenty of space for carefree cycling, sweeping lake views and refreshing swimming stops.  Right in the middle glistens Lake Scharmützel: nestled in the Saarow hills, with clear water and known as the ‘Märkisches Meer’ (Markish Sea) since Fontane. On this relaxed day trip, you will circle Brandenburg's second largest lake and experience exciting contrasts: the sophisticated Bad Saarow, the Nordic-style harbour flair in Wendisch Rietz and, again and again, beautiful places to swim.

Start/finish: Bad Saarow railway station

Length/duration: 33 km/54 km/approx. 3–3.5 hours/4–4.5 hours

Character: Scenic route, mostly on paved cycle paths, offering fantastic views of the lake. Predominantly flat with a few gentle hills for variety.

Route: Bad Saarow, Saarow village, Bad Saarow beach, Wendisch Rietz, Diensdorf-Radlow, Pieskow, Bad Saarow

Route description

Bad Saarow – a feeling of arrival

Just under an hour east of the capital and easily accessible by train, Bad Saarow is the elegant starting point for this water-rich lake tour. Between the spa gardens and the lake promenade, the route winds slowly along shady paths under old trees, past green lawns. At the Kurfürstensteg, the view opens up and reveals what makes this place so special: the Märkische Meer in all its vastness.

Hidden bays and beaches: on the west bank above the Silberberg

Behind Bad Saarow, the path dips into accompanying wooded areas. The former railway line is a wonderful place to get rolling. We recommend stopping at the bathing area at the Lustgarten in Saarow village. A few kilometres further on, a lake access leads to the historic ‘Neptun’ lido. If you're looking for a place to stop for refreshments, you'll find the perfect atmosphere next door at ‘Das Dorsch’. With a few vigorous pedal strokes, you'll quickly reach Silberberg, from where you can descend to Wendisch Rietz.

Wendisch Rietz – Scandinavian colours at the harbour

At the southern end of the lake, Wendisch Rietz welcomes visitors with a relaxed holiday atmosphere. The promenade leads to the small ‘seabridge’ and on to the harbour. Colourful wooden houses line the shore. A few pedal strokes further on, the Wendisch Rietz fish house entices visitors with the delicious smell of smoked fish.

Villages with their stories

After Wendisch Rietz, the route switches to the eastern side of the lake. In the small village of Radlow, it is worth taking a look at the stork's nest. It is also recommended to plan a stop at the old school barn. Shortly before the destination, Cecilienpark with its wide beach invites you to linger. In the beer garden of the ‘Freilich am See’, you can enjoy the late afternoon sunlight.

Sights:
  • Bad Saarow: Spa gardens, Villa Paolo
  • Wendisch Rietz: Scharmützelsee leisure park
  • Diensdorf-Radlow: Old school barn, water sports rest area

Refreshment tips:
