The spacious Seilerplatz square in Fürstenwalde is characterised by the harmonious ensemble of the Catholic St John Baptist Church and the parish hall that was built in the same style as the church. The former agricultural area between the town centre and the train station had evolved into a bourgeois residential area by the end of the 19th century. A rope maker lived in one of the houses, and he used the square to stretch his ropes, giving rise to the name that is still used today. The Catholic citizens of the town got their own vicarage in 1898, and the three-aisle church on Seilerplatz was built in 1906. The original plans by architect Engelbert Seibertz from Berlin provided for a neo-Gothic brick building with an impressive 68 metres tall tower. However, the tower was badly damaged in World War II and it was not rebuilt at its original height.
