Route description

In Mönchwinkel, a small rest area by the Spree with a refuge invites you to take a first observation break. Barn swallows, house martins, greenfinches and house sparrows can regularly be seen here. With a bit of luck, the distinctive call of the hoopoe can also be heard.

The bridge over the Spree is a worthwhile stop. In spring, numerous reed warblers sing their loud, creaking song in the reedbeds. The quieter voice of the reed warbler mingles in between, while red-backed shrikes use the surrounding copses as hunting grounds. Common ravens perform impressive flight displays above the nearby pine forests. Black woodpeckers are also at home here and attract attention with their far-reaching calls.

Behind the Spree bridge, the road leads south through a pine forest and passes an oxbow lake of the Spree. The route finally reaches the small colonist village of Kirchhofen. In spring, the now rare whinchats rest here, while stonechats can easily be observed on fences and pasture fences. Red-backed shrikes are ubiquitous in this area and the chances of spotting a hoopoe are particularly high here.

If you are traveling by bike, cross the Spree again on the L 23 near Hartmannsdorf, turn right in Spreeau and finally reach the starting point Mönchwinkel again via Spreewerder. Along the route, there are numerous opportunities for birdwatching in the extensive Spree floodplain.

Additional tips

  • Alternative discovery tour: A canoe tour from Hangelsberg to Erkner offers a completely new perspective on the birdlife of the Müggelspree. Thanks to the calm current, relaxed observations are possible directly from the water. Canoes can be hired in Hangelsberg and returned in Erkner.
