The 20 metre high tower offers a view of the Borcheltsbusch nature reserve, a 300 hectare moor. The view extends across fields to the sand dumps of the post-mining landscape on one side and the Niederlausitzer Landrücken mountain range on the other.

In autumn, there's a real buzz here: up to 2,000 cranes spend the night in the Borcheltsee lake and in the reedbeds, as the Borcheltsbusch is at the heart of the Luckau Basin crane gathering and resting area. From the observation tower, the majestic birds can be seen flying in and out every evening and morning. Bean geese and white-fronted geese, waders, ducks and white-tailed eagles can also be seen.

In summer, individual cranes linger at Borcheltsbusch, while ospreys and marsh harriers can be observed with luck.

Tip: Most cranes can be seen in September and October. During this time, the nature reserve offers guided tours at weekends.

How to get there: The tower is located between Goßmar and Freesdorf on the local road. Parking is available 50 metres away in the direction of Freesdorf.
  • Luckau - drive in the direction of Calau. Take the junction to Freesdorf. In Freesdorf, follow the village road to Goßmar.
  • Luckau - follow the B96 in the direction of Finsterwalde. Turn left after Goßmar and follow the signs to Freesdorf.

Note: 72 steps lead to the 15 metre high platform. The tower is unlit, so it is better to bring a torch for the descent for evening birdwatching.
