In the middle of the historic town centre of Bernau, the imposing building of the church of St. Marien towers above the roofs of the houses. The brick Late Gothic hall church in its current form dated from 1519. The interior, which has remained unchanged and undamaged for over 500 years, is also quite special. The six-winged main altar, which is attributed to the school of Lucas Cranach, draws particular attention with its filigree carvings. The crucifixion in the transition to the choir is also striking. A further highlight of the interior fittings is the pulpit dating from 1609.

The high interior of the church offers outstanding acoustics and is therefore ideal for concerts. The program for this is available on the church website. There is a service every Sunday. On a guided tour, visitors learn more about the fixtures and fittings and the church’s historical background.

But even if the church is closed, there is still plenty to discover at the church – for example the mosaic on the ground to the north of the church. It marks where the two bell foundries found here in 1999 during construction work. The wall trail passes right by the church along the old town wall.
