The origins of the touring puppet theatre are at the Schwarze Elster River in Saxony: as a popular puppet theatre, it entertained the masses 250 years ago. This museum located in Bad Liebenwerda reveals the former significance of the puppeteers and their puppet theatre in community life. The adjacent Lubwartturm observation tower, a medieval keep, offers an impressive 360-degree view of the town of Bad Liebenwerda. Its former servants’ house now houses the museum.

The Mitteldeutsches Marionettentheatermuseum, the Central German puppet theatre museum in Bad Liebenwerda, opened the doors to “Casper’s Worlds” on September 9, 2020. From then onwards, visitors will experience a completely redesigned museum on the history of the fun character in a puppet show, in which Casper has taken over control. During the tour of the exhibition, interactive models and figures invite visitors to join in and have a go. The puppet makers Jürgen Maaßen and Rainer Schicktanz contributed with interactive puppets and models. Visitors can slip into a medieval fool’s costume, have a go at performing a puppet show on stage or make shadow silhouettes. At the funfair, they can act out scenes with headless Kaukautzky puppets or throw balls in the tin-can alley. Visitors can and should touch and try out lots of things here. The exhibition areas are supplemented with film and listening stations, created under the guidance of media designer Christian Becker and which reinforce and continue with the exhibition’s content. The exhibition is kept alive not only by the many hands-on activities, but also by the museum’s own puppet stage, the regular performances by guest puppeteers, the International Puppet Theatre Festival in September as well as a museum funfair in November.
