The lake Rietzer See is part of the Emster Canal and it is located in the heart of the European bird sanctuary. The area around the village Kloster Lehnin that was established in the 12th century, is characterised by various swamps and lakes. Via narrow oxbow lakes of the Havel, the Emster Canal connects the lakes Rietzer See, Netzener See and Klostersee. Some sections are very narrow and overgrown and fish traps are positioned up to the centre of the waterway. Boaters can have a very special experience among tunnel-like passages and the open water surfaces of Rietzer See.

The bird-watching tower at Rietzer See is ideal for watching the more than 260 bird species of the nature reserve. Rietzer See is very shallow – just one metre deep in some places. It is used as a breeding ground by red kites, garganeys, and great and little bitterns, and as a feeding ground by cranes, geese, waders and birds of prey who are passing through.

To protect the natural habitat, buoys mark the waterway across the lake. Boating outside this waterway is not permitted. Tours of the area are available by request. Information is available from the Kloster Lehnin Tourist Information Centre: +49 3382 2363899.
