Probably the oldest Gothic Revival village church in Mark Brandenburg is in Paretz. The former church was significantly smaller than it is now. The partially half-timbered church tower was built in about 1700. In 1724, Paretz got its first little bell and in 1725/27 Ketzin master carpenter Frentsche made a Rococo pulpit altar. It was rebuilt in 1797/98. During the rebuild, the truss roof we see today was added to the church. The church tower was fully rebuilt and Queen Luise sponsored a positive organ.

The church was renovated again in 1856/57. It was given two extra windows, the pulpit altar was removed and the lord’s box was converted into a sacristy. In 1984, a larger organ was installed, replacing Queen Luise’s positive organ. The church has been returned to its former glory on the outside for the last two years and is a tip for days out in Paretz along with the castle, the coach house and much more. The illusionistic ceiling painting was reapplied along with old finds that have been left visible and the historic chandelier was restored and electrified. At the end of 2008, the church nave was painted according to historic findings.

The poet and travel writer Theodor Fontane clearly liked Paretz a lot too. An entire chapter is dedicated to the village in Havelland in his work “Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg” (Walks through the March of Brandenburg). In it, he dedicated a paragraph to providing detailed information on the church in Paretz: “The little church in its current presentation is contrasted to its advantage against the castle building opposite [...]. An indifferent, everyday beauty that has the conceit of not wanting to wear any ornamentation.”
