“Reason for the people” (“Vernunft fürs Volk”) was the motto of Reckahn’s landlord Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow (1734-1805), who is considered the founder of the Prussian school system. Together with his wife Christiane Louise von Bose (1734-1808), he offered free schooling on his estates to promote literacy and to combat superstition and ignorance; 30 years before the Prussian reforms. Rochow’s reading book “Der Kinderfreund” (“The children’s friend”) was used across Europe.

The overall ensemble of the castle (1729), estate park (around 1730), baroque church (1741) and school building (1773) can still be seen in Reckahn today. The Rochow Museum at Reckahn Castle is dedicated to the life and work of the innovator. The school building with its historic class room from around 1900 is home to the Reckahn School Museum.
