The collector and researcher Emil Obst, who came to Bitterfeld at the end of the 19th century as a field surveyor, is to thank for the foundation of a comprehensive history collection, which has expanded to include the topics of the Middle Ages, biology, geology and ballooning. There are informative and entertaining things to experience in the permanent and special exhibitions, and younger visitors will especially enjoy the interactive children's play areas. A special highlight is the amber cellar. Here you can see some of the finds from the 425 tons of amber that were mined from the mica sands beneath the Bitterfeld lignite seam in the former Goitsche lignite open pit mine.
