The Langer Stall (“Long Stable”) – 170 metres in length and therefore appropriately named – was built under Frederick William I as a riding and parade house according to plans by Pierre de Gayettes in 1734. As usual at the time of Frederick William I, the building was a half-timbered construction for time and cost reasons. It was located directly between the city canal, the Kutschstall (""carriage house"") and the Garrison Church. In 1781 the successor, Frederick the Great, had a representative display façade built in front of the southern half-timbered gable designed by Georg Christian Unger. The building served purely scenic purposes and shows how important it was for Frederick the Great to redesign the royal residence which had been designed by his father in a rather simple and functional manner.

During the air raid on Potsdam on April 14, the Long Stable caught fire, completely destroying the large half-timbered building. The listed portal dating from 1781 was preserved as a ruin and restored in 1983/84.
