Nauener Tor is one of three preserved city gates and it is assumed to be the earliest example of architecture in the English neo-Gothic style on the European continent. In 1755 King Frederick II delivered his sketch for the gate to the master builder and architect Gottfried Büring. The neo-Gothic architecture conveys the impression of a much older gate. This is the reason for its significance in European architecture. Beside the early British neo-Gothic architecture it is the first building of that style on the continent. The town wall and the attached older baroque gate was removed in the 19th century. After reconstruction the gate was renewed in 1996/97 and got its original colour again.
