Willi Frohwein Square in Potsdam-Babelsberg was named after Auschwitz survivor Willi Frohwein. In 2020/2021, the square was redesigned as a place of remembrance. From then on, it serves both as a memorial to Holocaust survivor Willi Frohwein and as a memorial to the victims of National Socialism. The designs for the new square design with memorial came from the landscape architecture firm Gehrke and the artist Susanne Ahner. Students from the Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium in Babelsberg were also involved. Willi Frohwein survived the Ausschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps, seriously ill. After the end of the war, he worked for the criminal police and became head of the commissariat. In the early 1950s, he began working as a recording supervisor at the DEFA film studios. Willi Frohwein dies on December 12, 2009 at the age of 86 at his home in Babelsberg. It was not until 2011 that the square received its current name. Until then it was called "Findling" or "Am Findling" by the people of Potsdam, referring to the large granite boulder in the center of the square.
