The park between Cöthen and Falkenberg was created based on an idea of Carl Friedrich von Jena. In the 1820s, he arranged for this wonderful piece of nature and the gorge through which the riverway Cöthener Fließ meanders towards Falkenberg and that is home to huge beech trees, to be turned into a landscape garden.

On his walks, Fontane described the park with its playful design as somewhat “quaint”, but naturally rather “peculiar”. Parts of the park are located in the source region of the beautiful riverway, and there are an old water wheel and a waterfall. The river valley with its near-natural stock of old trees is home to many animal species, such as the brook trout, kingfisher and the grey wagtail. The water wheel was built by Carl von Jena in 1925/26 and it used to power a piston pump that was used to supply Cöthen with water. It is now part of a fauna and flora habitat protection area that includes a hillside moor and wetland forests. The waterfall is located in the spot where von Jena once set up a Roman bath for his family.

Year of construction: 1920s
How to get there: Car: B158 to Falkenberg, continue on the L35 to Cöthen
