The Freilandmuseum Lehde is welcoming its guests to the 19th century! Discover life in the 19th century Spreewald at the oldest open-air museum in Brandenburg. The museum team is awaiting you wearing traditional Sorbian clothing and will take you to four historic farmsteads from different regions of the Spreewald. Here you will be able to visit originally furnished farm houses and discover a family bed that actually held an entire family. Learn about exciting details of historical craftsmanship or visit the Spreewald’s oldest punt-making factory.

Even Theodor Fontane once visited this place. In 1859, right after his return from London, the poet and novelist visited the Spreewald, taking a tour on a traditional wooden punt. He also travelled to Lübben, Lübbenau, and Burg im Spreewald where he admired the unique natural landscape with its streams, the Sorbian and Wendish traditions, as well as the typical regional products to all of which he later paid homage in his famous travelogue: “Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg” (Ramblings through the March Brandenburg).

Pure nature at the Bauerngarten

In between the streams grows a lush cottage garden with flowers, herbs, medicinal and old agricultural plants which are reflecting the change of seasons. Typical Spreewald specialities such as gherkins and spicy horseradish are growing next to blue flax. In the shade of the fruit trees you can take a rest from the hectic daily life or taste and smell what grows in the farm garden.

Adventure sites for the entire family

At the Freilandmuseum Lehde’s adventure sites, the entire family can get a hands-on experience by doing the traditional, old-fashioned chores which used to be part of every-day life: Towels are being cleaned with a washboard and soap, urban children get to milk a cow or try on some traditional wooden shoes. Jump ropes and stilts are still as much fun today as they were 100 years ago, and you can dream in a bed of hay.

Between regional variety and Spreewald tradition – discover our old farm buildings during a walking tour with a traditionally dressed guide at Freilandmuseum Lehde. Additionally, the museum offers workshops that teach historical craftsmanship techniques, such as spinning and blueprint. Visitors can enjoy year-round markets and events such as the Spreewald Christmas.
