The town of Gartz is situated near Schwedt/Oder in Brandenburg's only national park. The area is well-known for its annual crane migration in September and October. Some years, as many as 10,000 cranes gather here, along with some 150,000 geese, ducks and swans. The nature conservation station (Naturwacht) offers guided tours all year round.

Tip:

In the morning and especially at dusk, thousands of cranes can be seen approaching and leaving their roosts in the Polish part of the national park. The dikes are particularly good for bird-watching.

How to get there:

Observation tower in Gartz: From Schwedt: In Gartz, drive to the Mühlenteich, turn right into Gartenstrasse at the ice cream parlour Zum Mühlenteich and carry on as far as the pumping station; from there it is another 500 metres on foot to the observation tower.
